  1. Price before GST = ₹10,000.00
  2. GST = ₹10,000.00 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹1,800.00 (CGST ₹900.00 + SGST ₹900.00)
  3. Total = ₹10,000.00 + ₹1,800.00 = ₹11,800.00

How to use the GST calculator

Enter an amount and say whether it excludes GST (you want to add tax to a base price) or includes GST (you want to find the tax hidden inside an MRP or invoice total). Pick the GST rate and whether the sale is within one state or between states. The calculator shows the GST amount, the final or pre-tax price, and the split into CGST + SGST for intra-state supplies or IGST for inter-state supplies, with the working shown step by step.

Current GST slabs (GST 2.0)

At its 56th meeting in September 2025, the GST Council replaced the old four-slab system (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) with a simpler structure, effective 22 September 2025:

RateApplies to (examples)
0% (nil / exempt)Fresh food, milk, paneer, Indian breads, education, individual life and health insurance
5% (merit rate)Packaged food, toiletries, medicines, most textiles and footwear, many items formerly at 12%
18% (standard rate)Most goods and services, including small cars, ACs, TVs, cement and most services formerly at 28% or 18%
40% (special rate)Luxury and sin goods: pan masala, tobacco products, aerated and sugary drinks, large cars and high-end motorcycles
3% / 0.25%Gold, silver and jewellery / cut and rough diamonds and precious stones

Since 1 February 2026 the GST compensation cess has ended; tobacco and pan masala now carry separate excise duty and a health cess outside GST, on top of 40% GST. Always check the HSN or SAC code of your item, as specific goods can sit at different rates.

GST formulas

Adding GST: GST = Price × Rate ÷ 100   |   Total = Price + GST
Removing GST: Price before GST = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate)   |   GST = Total − Price

A common mistake is to remove GST by subtracting 18% of the total. That overstates the tax: 18% of ₹11,800 is ₹2,124, but the actual GST inside ₹11,800 is ₹1,800.

Worked example

A service costs ₹10,000 before tax at 18%. GST is 10,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹1,800 and the invoice total is ₹11,800. If the buyer is in the same state, the invoice shows CGST ₹900 and SGST ₹900; if in another state, IGST ₹1,800. Going the other way, a product with an MRP of ₹1,050 at 5% GST has a pre-tax price of 1,050 × 100 ÷ 105 = ₹1,000 and GST of ₹50.

CGST, SGST and IGST explained

  • CGST and SGST/UTGST are charged in equal halves on sales within a state or union territory. The central and state governments each get one half.
  • IGST is charged on inter-state sales and imports, at the full rate, and is later shared between the centre and the destination state.
  • Input tax credit: registered businesses can offset GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales, so tax is effectively paid only on the value added at each stage.

Tips for businesses and shoppers

  • Businesses with turnover above ₹40 lakh (goods) or ₹20 lakh (services) — lower in special-category states — must register for GST.
  • Check that the MRP on goods made before 22 September 2025 was revised to pass on rate cuts.
  • For margin and pricing decisions, pair this with the margin calculator and markup calculator. Outside India, use the VAT calculator or the sales tax calculator.

GST rates are set by the GST Council and can change. Results are for estimation; check the official rate for your HSN/SAC code before invoicing.

Frequently asked questions

What are the current GST slabs in India?

Since 22 September 2025 the main GST rates are 0%, 5% (merit rate), 18% (standard rate) and 40% (luxury and sin goods), with special rates of 3% for gold and jewellery and 0.25% for diamonds and precious stones.

How do I remove GST from a total amount?

Divide the total by (1 + rate/100). For 18% GST, ₹11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 before tax, so the GST is ₹1,800.

Are 12% and 28% GST rates still applicable?

No. The 12% and 28% slabs were removed from 22 September 2025. Most goods moved to 5% or 18%, and some luxury and sin goods moved to 40%.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For sales within a state, GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state). For sales between states, the full amount is charged as IGST.

How is 18% GST calculated?

Multiply the pre-tax price by 0.18 to get the GST, then add it to the price. On ₹10,000, GST is ₹1,800 and the total is ₹11,800.
